MEET AMANDA
Welcome to Meet Amanda. I’ll be posting a series of articles to allow you to find out more about things behind the scenes at Sunshine Hippo.
Why sewing? Well, in January 2018 after a gap of 27 years I rediscovered my first creative love – sewing. I’m hooked! It makes me happy!
I enjoy the different feel and textures of the various fabrics and the way that they feed my creativity, to say nothing of the wonderful colours. I like to have a good look and get to know the fabric before I create something.
I usually do this when I’m hand washing all my new fabrics and then ironing them. It’s a job that takes ages but it’s so rewarding. I honestly think that I’m turning into a bit of a fabric magpie!
BONNIEDOGS
These are my range of fabric home decor dogs which are perfect as a gift for a dog lover or decor for a lounge/bedroom. Bonniedogs were the first item that I created and so close to my heart.
They are inspired by my husband’s Scottish terrier Bonnie, who was small but mighty in every way. She sadly died in 2018, 2 months after my own dog, George and whenever I create a new Bonniedog, I think of them and all the good times we enjoyed. The name Bonnie, in Scotland means beautiful and that is what she embodied.
BOOKMARKS
I’m a total bookworm and have been all my life.
The best times are book times together with a snuggly blanket, coffee and cake.
It’s this love of books that led me to create my unique range of fabric bookmarks in funky shapes.
After all, every good book deserves a good bookmark!
PASSPORT COVERS
I live in Spain with my husband and my family live in the UK, so I frequently travel between the two countries. It was whilst waiting for my flight at the airport that I felt in my hand luggage for my passport and nothing.
I went into a blind panic as I ran around the airport looking for it. What had actually happened was that in my over-stuffed hand luggage my passport had gone inside my book and I couldn’t feel it. I decided to make passport covers so that this would never happen again, and it hasn’t!
AFRICA RANGE
The Africa range is something precious to me as it features artwork by my late father, Allen Bridgland.
He had a deep love for Africa which shines through his art.
